The Story of the Chariot

Long ago in the sacred city of Puri, Lord Jagannath — the dark-eyed Lord of the Universe — expressed a wish to leave his golden temple and visit his birthplace, the Gundicha Mandir, where his aunt awaited him. So once each year, on the second day of the bright half of Asadha, the three deities step out of the sanctum and ascend their towering wooden chariots.

Carved anew every year from the wood of fragrant neem trees, the three chariots — Nandighosa, Taladhwaja and Darpadalana — rise like moving temples. They are pulled not by horses, but by the hands of devotees, for it is said that even one touch of the rassi dissolves the karma of countless lifetimes.

For nine days the Lord lives in his aunt's home. Devotees feed him, sing to him, dance for him. Goddess Lakshmi, left behind in the great temple, sets out in search of her beloved on the fifth day — Hera Panchami — in one of the most tender episodes of Indian sacred story.

Then comes the Bahuda Yatra — the return. The chariots roll back home, carrying with them the memory of every face that gazed upon the Lord. To witness the Ratha Yatra is, the scriptures say, to be carried across the ocean of existence itself.

The RNJS Sarbojanin Ratha Yatra

The RNJS Sarbojanin Ratha Yatra is a major annual festival organized within the Bengal Shapoorji Sukhobristi housing complex in Action Area III, New Town, Kolkata. Because Sukhobristi is one of the largest mass housing projects in the country — spanning 150 acres — the festival draws massive participation, making it one of the most significant community-driven Ratha Yatras in the region.

Origins & The Building of the Temple

The festival has humble roots that have grown rapidly over the last decade. The idols of Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra, and Devi Subhadra were originally brought directly from Odisha.

"The idols were brought from Odisha in 2015 and established in a hut. We started rathyatra that year on a small scale. There were just about a dozen of us…"
— KSHYAMADRI MAHARANA, RNJS

Following those early celebrations, the community came together to build a permanent structure. The Jagannath temple within the complex was constructed throughout 2017 and officially opened in January 2018.

Festival Highlights

Themed Mashi Bari

Each year the society constructs an elaborate pandal as the Mashi Bari — the aunt's house where the deities rest. The 2024 pandal was heavily inspired by the Badrinath temple.

A Controlled, Intimate Route

Unlike public street processions, the chariot rolls strictly within the Sukhobristi complex — a decision made to safeguard the immense devotional crowd of residents.

Synchronized with Puri

The pulling of the chariot on the main day does not begin until the society receives word that the primary chariot in Puri has started its sacred journey.

Daily Cultural Immersion

Cultural programs hosted by residents every evening, and the distribution of Prasadam each day during the deities' stay at the pandal.
